Western Culture

Western culture was taken to new worlds in the 1500's, mainly by the many traders, missionaries, colonists and explorers of the time. When the 1700's arrived, political turmoil was rife, with both the French and the American Revolutions being prevalent to the western way of life. Civil rights, justice, democracy and equality were established, and were to become the fundamentals of western cultures. Toward the end of the 1800's, the British dramatically changed western culture with the introduction of the Industrial Revolution. Materialism was born from consumerism, and the push for progress and development only became stronger and more accepted. In effect, this changed the world we lived in!

One aspect of the West that remained influenced by the Greco-Roman times was music. It was to become the basis of all Western religious and classical music. The Christian church was by far the leading developer of music. They used chant based collectives influenced by the Jewish in an attempt to compete with other religions. Music was now used as a tool to gain followers and was more prolific than ever!

In the Arts, Florence led the way in revamping styles for drawing and painting. The days of realism had arrived; especially within the category of portraiture, where upon the realistic nude form was highly valued, whether it was drawn, painted, or sculptured. The Celtic knot was also very regularly symbolized within western Art. When it came to dance, plays, or drama, performers rarely wore masks and there were seemingly no restrictions when portraying any past or present religious leaders or gods! The West also held onto the architectural influences of the past. Many Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, and Victorian style buildings were erected, and the use of columns became prominent. Western man later adapted these early architectural systems to design and build skyscrapers.

When photography came along, it presented the basis for one of the most powerful mediums of all our existence, the film and television industry! From the first of the soap operas played on the first wireless radios, came the development of television in the mid 1900's. To this day, many a country has been westernized by the influence of television programs. Principles were seemingly abandoned as content for new ideas were sought in order to deliver fresh programming. The respect for ancient values and principles were further diminished as modern day story telling grew into a huge and powerful business!

America established a powerful ally within their media technology, and grew to become one of the most influential of all cultures in the West. The USA took advantage of their advancements, and pushed their products to the world through their fashion, entertainment, and leading edge technology. Sexy music clips became the norm, and now we are into the world of the internet, where we can experience just about anything imaginable in this day and age.
