Western Beliefs

Ancient Western beliefs and ceremonial rituals concerning the supernatural have been practiced by ancient Romans, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, and many more cultures. Such beliefs in fact date back to prehistoric man worshipping the Sun Gods. The ancient philosophers of the Western worlds were strongly influenced by religion and science. Philosophy went on to be considered a much deeper, logical, and universal school of thought, effectively creating the basis for astrological theories.

Initial origins of astrology that developed in Europe, The Middle East, and Asia, came from ancient Babylonia around 2000 BC. Around 1700 BC, superstition was a natural part of the Babylonian way of life. Many omens were practiced and believed to hold karmic and universal forces. The Temple libraries of the chief cities of Babylon housed 70 tablets with over 7,000 recorded astrological omens on them. The Babylonian system of celestial omens later spread to India, China, and Greece.

Around 200 BCE in Alexandria, the Babylonian system was combined with the ancient Egyptian decanic astrology, effectively creating horoscopic astrology. Astronomers and Astrologers were making their predictions in accordance with the movement of the planets, and this new version of astrology soon spread to ancient Europe, India, and The Middle East. Astronomy and Astrology worked hand in hand it seemed. They were only separated later by the ancient Greeks.

When looking for cosmic influences, it was the ancient astrologers who first tracked and recorded the systematic movements of the planets and the stars. In fact, commencing in the Classical Period right through until the Scientific Period, the art of astrology played a major role in the development of mathematical, philosophical, and medical advancements. It was not always a given and trusted form of practice however, as it was often questioned by Hellenistic and Medieval philosophers, and by the Christian Church! It sometimes appears that the Western culture on the whole have few ancient memories, and even less respect for past beliefs. Many modern day cultures may appear to know where they are going, but it often appears that they have forgotten where they came from!
