The West

The West was developed over many generations. It is more likely to be considered the result of ancient Greco/Roman and Judeo/Christian civilizations, as well as the medieval cultures of Germanic, Celtic and Slavic times. It is also quite representative of the beliefs perpetuated through out the European Renaissance. When we look to The West, we look to the cultures of European origin and their ancient descendants.

The initial origins of The West could best be considered as a result of all things Greek. Without the Greek influences of philosophy, art, music, literature and architecture, the ancient Romans would have had little with which to base the development of European cultures on. When the Roman Empire collapsed, a lot of the Greco-Roman influences such as art, literature, and science were no longer.

Europe effectively became a battleground for political freedom, and many wars were created between its kingdoms and regions. Europe was in essence, taken over by Christianity, led by the Roman Catholics. During Medieval times, the power of the Church was ominous as many a cathedral and monastery were built. Christianity was now a power to be reckoned with, and was only going to grow stronger. In fact, the spreading of Christianity was influential in the spreading of early Western culture!

Even though architecture, music, and art may have originated in ancient times, the West has been most influential in regard to their development, especially within the fields of music, dance, and story telling. In fact, we can still associate many ancient ways with today's modern western world. Just as the Greeks were the super power of ancient times, today's America has fulfilled the same role. The ancient gladiators fulfilled the same purpose as many of today's sporting heroes, and ancient Pompeii and its artistic influences, provided the basis for the development of the media and entertainment industries. The West has since represented a true growth period for mankind in many and varied a field!
