Solar System

Our Solar System is made up of the Sun, the planets, their moons, countless asteroids and comets, over 130 satellites of the planets, and the interplanetary medium. It is tiny when compared to space itself. It is always on the move due to our Sun racing through the Universe and dragging its Solar System with it. There are most likely many more planetary satellites or moons yet to be found as our curiousity grows.

Our Solar System was most likely formed from the gravitational collapse of a gaseous cloud called the solar nebula which was approximately two to three times as large in mass as The Sun. Our freshly created Sun's solar wind then came into play, blowing away all the gases and dust remaining into interstellar space. With no more cloud, dust and gases to react, this action ended the growth of any future planets in our Solar System.

Every element of our Solar System plays an important part in the balance, structure and existence of life as we know it. Our planet alone has been saved from destruction many times thanks to the gravitational powers of other planets and their moons. It has survived many rogue asteroids that have headed our way on a collision course. Without the planets playing their part in the universal dance, our Earth would be a very different place. We should appreciate just how powerless we would be should the Solar System not work so kindly in our favor as time goes by.
