Neptune

God of the Sea

Neptune was the son of Saturn, and brother of Jupiter and Pluto. Neptune was also referred to as the Earth Shaker and considered the God of Earthquakes. Jupiter gave Neptune the responsibility of the Seas, where upon Neptune started out as the God of Springs and Streams, before he was elevated to his position as the God of the Sea. He was often portrayed carrying his trident whilst riding a dolphin.

Considering his family, Neptune was never really considered as a God of great power or influence. As strange as it sounds, given that he had control over the Mediterranean and the oceans, it was not really his fault. The Romans were warriors. Sailing the seas was not their specialty. In fact, they were considered average sailors when compared to other cultures in ancient times. When Caesar crossed the English Channel to invade Britain, it was heralded as a true conquest of great seamanship.

....

The Greeks knew of him as Poseidon, who was hugely popular amongst these tried and true fisherman and mariners. Poseidon played a much more active role in mythology than did Neptune. He went to battle against Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom, over control of Athens. Poseidon did not win, but at least he was seen as an active leader and God. Another legend tells of a falling out with the King of Troy. Both Poseidon and Apollo assisted in erecting the walls to the city, but their promised payments were never received. Acting like a true God, Poseidon unleashed a ferocious and terrifying monster from the sea, to destroy the Trojan's land. When the Greeks went to the Trojan War, Poseidon assisted them with calm seas for their journey, and for their triumphant return.

Poseidon married Amphitrite, one of the Nereids, and had a son, Triton. Like most of the Gods, he had a wandering eye which led to many affairs, mostly with the Nymphs of the Fountains and Springs. He fathered many wild and wicked children, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, and the giant, Orion. One could say he made up for them, for when he united with Gogon Medusa, the beautiful and majestic winged horse, Pegasus was born.
