Jupiter was the heavyweight of all the Universal Gods! In the
order of the earliest male Gods, only his grandfather,
Uranus, and his father, Saturn, served before him.
Jupiter reigned over all other Gods in many cultures,
beliefs and mythology. In Greek mythology, he was
known as the formidable and ruling Olympian, Zeus.
It was the Romans who gave Zeus the name Jupiter,
the Supreme God. He was considered God of the Sky, who
brought the clouds and the rains. He was also known
as the Protector
of the Human Race, the Protector of the Weak, the Punisher of the
Evil, and the God of Mercy and Justice. No Gods
before him had ever had such reverence, or such
levels of almighty and supreme powers!

Jupiter
took his kingship when he forced his father,
Saturn (Cronus), to disgorge his fellow Olympians
from
his stomach, where upon all the Olympians, led
by Jupiter, overthrew their father Saturn and
his Titan children. Jupiter took control of the
skies,
and split the responsibilities of the sea and
the underworld with his brother's Neptune and Pluto
respectively. Earth was to be governed by all
three.
Jupiter gave day and night to mankind, along
with the weather, especially the thunder and lightning
storms. His symbol was the electrifying
lightning bolt, which he used many times to defeat
his enemies. His other symbol was the eagle,
which
also served as his messenger. Jupiter was considered
to control life and death, and was able to determine
human destiny through reading the birds behavior
in the skies. It seems he had it all! Only the
Goddesses of Fate and Destiny were permitted
to oppose him.
Gaia was said to have advised Jupiter that if he married the desirable Metis, he would be overthrown by the offspring just as his father and grandfather were. Jupiter heeded Gaia's advice and swallowed Metis as a solution. Shortly after, Athena was said to have grown out of his head. Gaia also helped Jupiter defeat Atlas and the Titans, but when her twenty four sons, the Giants, attacked Olympia, Gaia and Jupiter drifted apart.

Jupiter initially married his sister (as his father Saturn also did), Hera, also known as Juno. He was constantly amorous, yet he was always trying to keep his conquests secret from his current wife. Jupiter had an ability to transform himself into whatever the respective maiden of his desire would be attracted to. He often abducted them and took them as his own. He was often seen accompanied by Fortuna, the Goddess of Fortune, Fama, the Goddess of Fame and by Nike, the Goddess of Victory. He was extremely promiscuous and had partners and affairs with both Goddesses and mortals. His unions brought many of the Gods and mortal heroes that followed, including Apollo, Mercury, Mars, Diana and Hercules.
Jupiter is the supreme God of the Roman Pantheon and was referred to as 'Jupiter Optimus Maximus', meaning 'Jupiter the Best and the Greatest'. He controlled the laws through his oracles and was the chief God of the Capitoline Triad. The largest temple built in Rome was that of 'Jupiter Optimus Maximus' on the Capitoline Hill. This was the nerve centre of Roman politics, where officials offered opinions and Roman generals came to give their praise. It was also the place where peace treaties were signed, and declarations of war were put in place. 'By Jupiter!' was stated when declaring an oath! It was later rehashed by Englishmen to 'By Jove!'
